World Pizza Day

Today is World Pizza Day, a day which might just be one of my son’s favourite days of the year. Possibly only trailing behind his birthday, Christmas, Easter and Pancake Day! I mean a day celebrating his favourite food is his idea of heaven! Jamie could literally eat pizza every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

World Pizza Day

Celebrated every February 9th, World Pizza Day is a chance to pay homage to one of the most loved food dishes in the world.

Originating of course in Italy, pizza has undergone a remarkable transformation as it has travelled across continents and cultures over the years.  Nowadays pizza is enjoyed in a number of diverse styles. From the Neapolitan pizza with its thin, chewy crust to the Chicago deep dish.  Other styles include the New York style pizza where New Yorkers favour foldable slices or the California-style pizza – a combination of the New York style and traditional Italian thin crust with typical Californian toppings.

The Great Topping Debate

When it comes to pizza, the topping options are virtually endless with this list claiming there are 687 types of pizza worldwide! Whilst classic choices like pepperoni, margherita and mushroom often make the top of the list, preferences will vary across regions, reflecting local taste and culinary traditions. For an interesting list of popular pizza choices per country click here.

But, is there any topping which quite simply does not belong on a pizza? Ask most Italians and they will surely agree that pineapple should not be anywhere near a pizza. That said, Gino Sorbillo, a third generation pizza maestro at Sorbillo has recently added pineapple as a topping to his pizza bianca in his restaurant in Naples. And, according to this article on CNN, this decision has divided people’s opinion around the world.

In our house our pizza favourites include the traditional prosciutto or pepperoni. However another favourite is a doner kebab pizza with yoghurt sauce. I am sure that this option would have pizzaiolos up in arms but don’t knock it till you’ve tried it. This is definitely one of my favourites and I highly recommend that you order one at Pizzeria Plaza when visiting Gibraltar.

Celebrating Pizza Perfection on World Pizza Day

So, back to today.  The kids have been off school as the teachers have had an in-set day.  It’s raining, cold and generally rather miserable out there so what better way to spend a Friday evening than making homemade pizza to celebrate World Pizza Day?  Pizza making is such a fun and easy activity to enjoy with your kids. So, why not give it a go?

Whilst you can of course make your own pizza dough, when cooking with kids I recommend keeping things as easy as possible.  Shop bought pizza bases are perfectly acceptable when trying to have fun cooking with little ones. And, as for essential basics, you will just need pizza bases, pizza sauce and mozzarella.  To that shopping list simply add your toppings of choice.  We went for one pepperoni and one bacon pizza keeping all four of us happy.  If you are into gadgets, then we recommend this pizza accessories set which includes a pizza peel, cutter, spatula, pizza pans and pans and more!  This will make your pizza making experience even easier.

Buon Appetito

Your homemade pizza will be prepped and cooked in under 30 minutes. That’s definitely less time than it will take for a takeaway to be delivered to you when there’s a weather warning in place!

Whatever your favourite pizza, we hope you are inspired to share this experience with your family this weekend.
