Roasties – The Foundation of Your Thanksgiving Side Dishes
Let’s start with the golden, crispy roast potatoes. Their crispy exterior and fluffy interior make them an irresistible addition to any Thanksgiving feast. Achieving the perfect roast potato involves parboiling them until the edges are slightly softened, and then roasting until they’re crisp and golden brown. The aroma of these potatoes, seasoned with herbs and spices, will undoubtedly entice everyone gathered around the table. Our Garlic Parmesan Roasties are a firm favourite at our house whatever the occasion. We are sure they will be at yours too.
Bacon Loaded Mashed Potato Casserole
As delicious as our roast potatoes are, a Thanksgiving or Christmas celebration must include some mashed potatoes. Our super creamy and cheesy mashed potato casserole will be a hit with kids and adults alike.
Roasted Vegetables
Accompanying the turkey and roast potatoes there simply must be a medley of colourful and nutritious vegetables. From honey-glazed carrots and roasted parsnips to deliciously cheesy cauliflower cheese and creamed leeks. Whilst we have to admit that these options are not low-calorie, they are delicious. They are also full of nutrients and part of your five a day so it’s all good, right? I mean, a roast dinner is a celebratory meal after all. Whether as part of a Thanksgiving or Christmas celebration or simply as a way to enjoy a special home-cooked meal at the end of a busy week. We love roasts during the colder months and these roast vegetables always accompany whatever meat choice is on offer.
The Final Component to Your Thanksgiving Side Dishes
And of course, stuffing is a timeless classic which simply must feature at the Thanksgiving table. Whether it’s a traditional bread-based stuffing or a classic sausage and apple rendition, this savoury concoction seasoned with herbs and aromatics is a nostalgic favourite for many. Whilst the stuffing can be baked inside the turkey I prefer to do this separately so as not to slow down the cooking time for the turkey.
Gravy
Lastly, we simply must have a luscious, velvety gravy to tie everything together. Usually made from the drippings of the roasted turkey, thickened with flour or cornstarch, and flavoured with herbs, this liquid gold is poured generously over the turkey and sides, adding a layer of richness and depth to each bite. A great homemade gravy must definitely form part of your cooking repertoire. We love this gravy recipe by Jamie Oliver. It is perfect as it allows you to make the gravy ahead of the big celebration allowing you more time to relax with your family.
